Sweden, 1971. This ad won GOLD, and more than half a century later, it's still up on YouTube. But honestly, I don't really know what the brand was, what it was selling, or what the context around it was. Still, something about this footage made it worth keeping.
The problem
Balamundi AB was listed in a Swedish trade directory from 1971 as a maker of exterior panel materials. It was based in Hisings Backa, near Gothenburg. In the Swedish Film Institute's database, this piece is recorded under the short film genre "Spelfilm" (fiction film). That suggests it may not have been an ordinary product pitch, but an ad built like a story.
What happened
What's on record is that it won GOLD.
Afterthought
I think ads can sometimes stay with us precisely because of what we don't understand about them. Who saw it, what they felt, why it won GOLD—the answers to all that exist only back in Sweden in 1971. But it's kind of wonderful that we can still watch it here in 2026.
