I Feel Like I Could Watch This for 30 Minutes / Burger King "Whopper Lust"

Just watching a Whopper spin around, over and over. Watch for 5 minutes, get one free coupon. 10 minutes, two. 15 minutes, three.

The insight

Getting someone's attention for 30 straight minutes, and having the cost (aside from media spend) basically amount to a single Whopper—that feels like a pretty amazing discovery.

The idea

On DirecTV channel 111, they ran an endless video of a Whopper slowly rotating. But every so often, a prompt would appear asking you to press a direction key on your remote—if you weren't actually watching, you'd fail and miss out.

What happened

Over the campaign week, they reportedly handed out 50,000 Whopper coupons. The campaign also won a Merit Award at The One Show.

Afterthought

Honestly, I feel like I could watch this for 5 minutes, or maybe even the full 30. Looking back at the results, it's a genuinely clever idea, but I think this one is really a triumph of execution. They layered in just enough interactive fun, while keeping the core idea dead simple: watch, and you get free food. That's a real fine play, if you ask me.
