WAITROSE & PARTNERS | Sweet Suspicion: A Deliciously Festive Whodunnit | 2025
The star dessert at Christmas dinner has vanished. Every member of the family is a suspect. With Succession's Matthew Macfadyen and Fleabag's Sian Clifford in the cast — an unlikely lineup for a supermarket ad — Waitrose pulled off a surprising two-part mystery.
Haraku Ramen | One Noodle | 2025
3.5 meters. That's the length of a single noodle. When I heard it described as "a noodle designed so you never have to hit pause," I couldn't help but laugh. This is a genuine love letter to gamers from an Indonesian ramen shop.
カップヌードル | ラクサ食べてよ | 2024
That buzz cut really caught me off guard. This commercial turns MAISONdes' song "Show Me Your Phone" into a parody, with an illustrated girl getting so hooked on laksa that she turns into a Cup Noodle-shaped buzz-cut man. The gap between that cute art style and what happens is intense!
CARREFOUR | ACT FOR FOOD | 2020
A supermarket broke the law, and ended up changing the law. And for that, it won the Grand Prix at Cannes. This is what it looks like when an ad actually moves society.
TESCO | Food Love Stories | 2018
This is the comeback story of a British supermarket that won the Grand Prix in the Media category at Cannes Lions in 2018. A campaign that was supposed to talk about food quality ended up winning by telling stories about human connection instead.
ALDI | Fresh Prints | 2018
I always thought "real-time" was a digital-only thing. But at 7am, vegetables wrapped in newspaper were delivered to homes across Spain, wrapped together with that very day's latest news. A comeback move where print media proved it could capture "freshness in this exact moment."
Burger King | Whopper Lust | 2017
Just watching a Whopper spin around, over and over. Watch for 5 minutes, get one free coupon. 10 minutes, two. 15 minutes, three.
ミエライス | いただきます、ミエライス | 2016
A local commercial that feels truly local. Honestly, that alone tells you everything - I think this is exactly what I'd been wanting to see.
CHIPOTLE | CULTIVATE CAMPAIGN (Back to the Start) | 2012
A fast food chain made an animated short attacking factory farming. The product never once appears on screen. And it still won two Grand Prix at Cannes. That's almost too bold to believe.
CHIPOTLE | Back to the Start | 2012
For 2 minutes and 20 seconds, it just talks about farms. No burritos, no smiling staff, not even the product name shows up. For a fast food ad, that's incredibly strange. And yet it ended up winning two Grand Prix at Cannes.
DORITOS | DIPS DESPERADO | 2012
Only 1 in 10 people in the UK were dipping their chips. To move that number, AMV BBDO invented a legendary Mexican who never existed.
NISSIN FOOD | HUNGRY? III UINTATHERIUM | 1994
This is the Uintatherium installment, from 1994. It's part of the era when the series that had already stunned the world with mammoths and moas was still going strong. A caveman gets tossed around by a giant mammal, but in the end there's just the word "hungry?" and that white cup with red. By now this rhythm needs no explanation. It's one of the sequels in the series that won the Grand Prix at Cannes as a whole and became a landmark in Japanese advertising history.
NISSIN FOOD | hungry? MOA | 1993
A Japanese commercial that won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1993. It's just a caveman chasing an extinct bird called a moa and never quite catching it—that's the whole story—but somehow it's funny, and somehow it sticks with you. The timing of the stop-motion creatures moving is just perfect.
LAURA SCUDDER DIV | SUPERMARKET | 1965
It's 1965, right around the time supermarkets were becoming part of everyday American life. This film, made by the California potato chip brand Laura Scudder together with DDB, won the Grand Prix.
MAGGI | OPÉRA BŒUF | 1957
1957. This is a MAGGI pot-au-feu ad where cattle sing and dance in the style of an opéra bouffe (comic opera). The moment I saw the title, I tilted my head and thought, "Beef opera?"—but once I watched the video, it all made sense. For an ad of its time, this is wildly bold.
