LAUT GEGEN NAZIS E.V. | HETZJAEGER. ANTIFASCIST ALGORITHMS. | 2022
There's an ad agency that created a neo-Nazi band / Laut gegen Nazis "HetzJaeger"
The most surprising part is this: this organization built, with their own hands, a neo-Nazi band that looked completely authentic. And they actually made it a hit.
The problem
In Germany, the rise of the far right keeps going, and music is often an easy way in. Thanks to streaming services, anyone can easily stumble onto Nazi-themed songs, and algorithms keep spreading them further and further.
The insight
The problem lies in the mechanics of the algorithm itself. So why not turn that against it—that's the core of the idea. They decided to copy the exact flow that spreads far-right music and send in a fake band riding on that very same mechanism.
The idea
They thoroughly analyzed the sound and lyrical traits of popular far-right rock bands, then made a song called "Kameraden" that checked every box the algorithm loves, releasing it under a fictional band called HetzJaeger. As planned, the teaser struck a chord with the far-right scene, and through social media, paid ads, and working the community, they steadily built up a fanbase. Then, in the full music video and the second verse of the lyrics, the twist was revealed: the whole thing was satire aimed at the far right and the platforms that had let it run unchecked.
What happened
It won a Gold Lion in the Creative Data category at Cannes Lions 2022. It was also recognized in the Media and PR categories, and was the only German entry to make the shortlist. After the reveal and the media pressure that followed, the platforms ended up removing a large number of illegal far-right songs and bands.
Afterthought
This really makes you realize advertising isn't just about dressing up brands. An algorithm's good intentions can quietly become a gateway into discrimination without anyone noticing. To break that, they raised a whole fake band from the ground up, earned people's trust, and then flipped it all at the end. It's so elaborate it's almost funny—but there's a seriousness behind it that's no laughing matter. This is exactly the kind of creative work, the kind that fights the system itself, that gets me the most fired up.
