Advertising Is for People / L'ORÉAL PARIS "THE FINAL COPY OF ILON SPECHT"

A 17-minute documentary that changes a life. Or, to be precise, it's an experience of watching a life that already *was* changed, forever. In 1971, a 23-year-old copywriter wrote four words that are still used around the world more than 50 years later. A film recording the words she spoke at the very end of her life just won the Grand Prix in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2025. This is a story about advertising. And it isn't. It's a story about a human being.

One Take, Six Minutes, Live Vocals, Don't Stop the Camera / PGLANG "WE CRY TOGETHER"

A six-minute film that won the Grand Prix in Film Craft at Cannes in 2023. Kendrick Lamar and Taylour Paige play a couple in a brutal argument. It was shot in a single take, with live vocals, in March 2020. The intensity makes you forget to breathe the whole time you're watching. This is less an "ad" than a "work" — but at the same time, it's also the piece that showed the world the overwhelming filmmaking craft of pgLang, the creative company Kendrick and his partner Dave Free launched in 2020.

A year spent fighting something invisible was also a year held up by something invisible / Otsuka Pharmaceutical CALORIEMATE "Invisible Things"

2020 was a year when everyone fought an invisible virus. And CALORIEMATE still delivered its usual commercial to that year's students taking entrance exams. But things didn't go as usual. Remote classes, disinfectant, acrylic partitions, cancelled competitions. The moment Naotaro Moriyama's "Sakura" started playing, the tears wouldn't stop.

Confusion Itself Was the Product / BURGER KING "CONFUSING TIMES"

2020 was a year when everyone felt confused. Burger King made a radio ad that put that exact feeling of confusion into words—things like catching a sneeze with your elbow, then high-fiving with that same elbow. And the twist is, it was actually an ad for the Impossible Whopper, which tastes like meat but isn't meat. Presenting confusion as confusion, honestly, turned out to be the most honest approach of all.

Beyond the Standard Masterpiece / Nike "The Future Isn't Waiting."

In November (11) 2020, all of Japan held its breath for two minutes. The film believed that the urge to play sports could lightly blow away garbage like discrimination. I've watched it ten times. "A standard masterpiece" feels like the right phrase for it, but that makes me wonder: what's the difference between a standard masterpiece and one that isn't standard at all?

How $1.05 Made It Impossible for Politicians to Stay Silent / March For Our Lives "Price on Our Lives"

$1.05. That's the total amount Senator Marco Rubio received from the NRA, divided by the total number of students in Florida. It's the orange price tag that survivors of the Parkland high school shooting wore as the "price" of their own lives. The campaign generated 826 media placements and 2.2 billion media impressions, and through the power of math, anger, and design, it irreversibly changed the gun control debate in America.

What's Lost and Gained Over Two Years / Kirin Afternoon Tea "Aitai tte, Atatametai da. 18 Fuyu"

This series began in winter 2016, and apparently this is its conclusion. It's the kind of project where the casting alone practically guarantees success, but using the same actors across multiple years takes it even further. You can clearly see, right there on screen, what's been lost and what's been gained, and in that sense a different kind of charm emerges.

Will anyone do this for me when I retire? / Suntory BOSS × Tokyo Metro "Working Is a Wonderful Thing. THE LAST TRAIN"

This is the story of a surprise staged for a station manager's retirement, at Akihabara Station after the last train had gone. On a platform where no one should have been at that hour, his coworkers were waiting for him. Just imagining someone close to you reaching their "last shift" is enough to bring tears to your eyes.
