TRANSPORT ACCIDENT COMMISSION | BEACH ROAD | 1991
A road safety ad from Australia, made in 1991. I watched it for the first time in 2024, and it sent a chill down my spine. The footage is over 30 years old, but that scream hasn't aged a day. Human screams, it turns out, don't come with an expiration date.
YMCA SUMMER CAMP | SLEEPING IN | 1991
An ad for YMCA Summer Camp from 1991, back when videotapes were still the norm. The title is "SLEEPING IN." It means sleeping late in the morning. Somehow that one phrase seems to capture both kids' summer vacations and what parents are secretly thinking.
エーザイ | チョコラBB | 1991
"Doesn't it wear you out, how many idiots there are in the world?" The moment Kaori Momoi said that straight into the camera, all of Japan erupted. In 1991, complaints poured in right after the Chocola BB commercial aired, and within a few days it was swapped for a different version. But that may have been the plan all along. This is the story of an almost too-perfect "hit, then hit back" moment that's gone down in advertising history.
VAUXHALL MOTOR CO | CAR PET | 1991
It's 1991, and the ad is called "CAR PET." It's wordplay—CAR and CARPET, PET and CARPET. And there's probably a dog somewhere in the video (just guessing here). Just the hint of that very British wit is already enough to make this fun.
PERRIER | LE LION ET LA LIONNE | 1991
This film won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 1991, and it's still the only French film ever to win the Film Grand Prix. 28 years later, it's remembered by one in two French people, and in 2019 it was voted the greatest ad of all time by the magazine Stratégies. That's how far a water ad can go.
