Some Screams Don't Fade, Even After 30 Years / TRANSPORT ACCIDENT COMMISSION "BEACH ROAD"
A road safety ad from Australia, made in 1991. I watched it for the first time in 2024, and it sent a chill down my spine. The footage is over 30 years old, but that scream hasn't aged a day. Human screams, it turns out, don't come with an expiration date.
The problem
The Transport Accident Commission (TAC), Victoria's road accident insurance body, was established in 1986. Starting around 1989, it kept making road safety ads that showed the "personal cost" of accidents without flinching.
The insight
A road with a 60 km/h speed limit. A car doing 90 km/h. The difference is just 30. But that 30 was enough to take a boy's life.
The idea
A mother's scream at the scene of the accident. That's all the ad shows. No explanation, no dramatization needed. Just one line: "Don't fool yourself, speed kills" — leaving no room for excuses.
What happened
The ad won GOLD. TAC went on to produce more than 40 campaigns, continuing to support road safety awareness in Victoria.
Afterthought
This is a hard ad to watch. But I think that's exactly why it gets through to people. Before we talk about ads being "moving" or "going viral," we shouldn't forget that ads like this have genuinely saved people's lives.
