Even God Can't Answer That / Sekisui Heim Tokai "Kamisama"
"When will the Tokai earthquake actually hit... what year, what month, what day! God, please tell us!" It's the kind of question anyone living in the Tokai region has probably wondered about at some point—and this ad turns it into a full-blown comedy sketch. And somehow, the product being sold is houses.
The problem
In the Tokai region, people have been saying "the Tokai earthquake is coming, it's coming" for nearly 40 years. It's said to be the only earthquake that might actually be predictable, and while everyone agrees it could strike at any moment, nobody can say exactly when. That constant sense of urgency mixed with uncertainty has shaped a unique mood in the region.
The insight
There's real courage in taking the anxiety of "we don't know when it's coming" and turning it straight into comedy. The power of imagination matters here—what's impressive is the ability to pull that imagination into the solution itself. The obvious approach would be to just promote earthquake resistance and call it a day. Instead, this ad has someone pressing a seismologist for answers, and eventually going all the way to ask God. That leap is what makes it great.
The idea
The ad shows someone pressing a seismologist: "What year, what month, what day will it happen?!" The seismologist replies, "I'm not God, you know." So naturally, they go track down God (played by a foreign actor). "God, what year, what month, what day will the earthquake happen?" they ask. God answers, in broken Japanese, "Dunno." The pacing and quick escalation are great, and it all lands on "With Sekisui Heim, you can feel safe." It has the feel of an old-school Showa-era comedy sketch, handling a genuinely heavy topic with a light touch.
What happened
It aired in the Tokai region (including Shizuoka) around 2009, and it's become one of those local commercials that people in Shizuoka still talk about today. It reportedly became a series, with follow-up entries like the "Electric Catfish" edition and the "Lantern Anglerfish" edition.
Afterthought
This one really got me thinking. "If you think about it the normal way, you only end up with a normal result"—that's so true. The courage to imagine something wild, plus the skill to tie it back to the product—with those two things together, even the heaviest topic can become an ad. Watching this woke me right up.
