CHEVROLET | STATION WAGON | 1959

In 1959, American Families Hit the Road on These Wings / CHEVROLET "STATION WAGON"

It's 1959. This is the year Chevrolet's station wagons hit American roads with cat's-eye taillights and tailfins that looked like wings. The ad film, made by Campbell-Ewald, reportedly won a GRAND PRIX.

The idea

The video is simply titled "STATION WAGON." I think they wanted to get straight to the point: the appeal of a wagon that could carry your whole family and all your stuff, anywhere you wanted to go. The 1959 Chevrolet was completely redesigned from the ground up, with low-set headlights, a rear end shaped in what was called a "seagull-wing" style, and distinctive cat's-eye taillights. Station wagons were hugely popular as family cars back then, and there was a whole lineup to choose from, two-door and four-door, from the Brookwood all the way up to the Nomad.

What happened

Records show it won the GRAND PRIX.

Afterthought

Campbell-Ewald was the agency that handled Chevrolet's advertising from 1919 onward, building a legendary partnership that lasted an astonishing 91 years. They created campaign after campaign that stuck in Americans' memories, like "See the U.S.A. in Your Chevrolet" and "Like a Rock." This 1959 film is just one page in that long history. I'd love for you to watch the video and feel the spirit of that era for yourself.
