An app that turns your humming into sheet music — just press record and sing. A quietly brilliant invention that won Gold at Cannes Lions.
The problem
Almost anyone can have a melody pop into their head, but very few people can actually write it down as musical notation. In composing and music education, how to capture a flash of inspiration the moment it happens has long been a real problem.
The insight
The founding team paired someone who had spent years researching how humans perceive music with a computer specialist. The key was trying to recreate, inside software, the very mechanism by which people unconsciously hear and understand melody.
The idea
All the user has to do is open the app, press record, and sing or hum. From there, the app reads the rhythm and melody and automatically turns it into sheet music. It syncs with your computer through the cloud too, so a sudden idea can be carefully developed later on.
What happened
It won Gold in the Mobile category at Cannes Lions in 2013, and also took Silver in the category that recognizes creative use of technology.
Afterthought
There's no flashy visual, no grand story here. But once you learn that years of research sit behind the simple idea of "turning humming into sheet music," it suddenly feels much weightier. A quiet, satisfying invention where technology truly serves human creativity.
