MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO | HAVE A CIGARETTE | 1975

In 1975, a single cigarette made Gold shine / MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO "HAVE A CIGARETTE"

This is a piece that Dentsu and Matsushita Electric made together in 1975. Half a century later, this piece of work still has its name left in the archives. Just from the title, you honestly have no idea what kind of ad this even is.

The problem

In 1970s Japan, this was the period right after the era of rapid economic growth, when TVs and home appliances were spreading into households all at once. Matsushita Electric was right in the middle of that, and it must have been one of the appliance makers putting real effort into its advertising. The fact that a record of this collaboration with Dentsu survives in old advertising award archives probably isn't unrelated to that backdrop of the times.

The insight

From the title "HAVE A CIGARETTE," I find myself imagining something like offering someone a cigarette—maybe it depicted a small pocket of free time, or a shift in mood or mindset. But I couldn't find any concrete evidence of what discovery or thinking the campaign was actually based on. I'll hold back from jumping to conclusions based on imagination alone.

The idea

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any materials that go into detail about the contents of the film, the copy, or the direction. Having only the title and the award record to go on feels fitting for a piece of work from half a century ago.

What happened

It's recorded as a piece that won GOLD. I couldn't confirm which award or which category exactly, but the fact remains that this gold record still survives today.

Afterthought

Honestly, I could barely find any evidence to back up details about this piece. Even so, just the fact that a Gold from 1975 still survives today is more than enough to make me feel romantic about it. Work that someone planned, someone filmed, and someone judged half a century ago still turns up in searches today, in the Reiwa era, by title alone. I think that's pretty amazing. If you're curious, I really hope you'll go track down the actual footage and watch it for yourself.
