HERTOG JAN | DON'T DRINK HERTOG JAN | 2025
Tell someone not to drink, and that's exactly when they want to / HERTOG JAN "DON'T DRINK HERTOG JAN"
A beer brand telling people "don't drink." On paper, that sounds like career suicide. But it's exactly what put this brand at the top of the Dutch market.
The problem
The Dutch beer market had long been Heineken's turf. Hertog Jan was always stuck in second place. The idea of aging beer - completely normal in the world of wine or whisky - was something nobody had tried with beer.
The insight
Turn beer from something you drink right away into something you raise. The waiting itself becomes love for the brand. "Don't drink" wasn't really a ban - it was just another way of saying "treasure this."
The idea
Built around the premium aging line "Grand Prestige," they created a system where people manage and wait for their own bottle of beer. A beer company, which should be begging you to drink, instead tells you not to. That reversal is what got everyone talking.
What happened
Market share grew from 13.6% to 19.4%, overtaking Heineken to become number one. And that was with a modest budget. It was recognized at Cannes too, but there's reportedly debate within the industry over who actually created this campaign.
Afterthought
Growing sales by telling people not to drink - that tears up the textbook. But reaching the top proves the idea had real strength. Still, it's a bit unsettling that the awards keep getting locked in while who actually deserves the credit stays murky.
