LUSTUCRU | LA PREUVE PAR L'OEUF | 1964

Proving it with an egg: a very French kind of honesty / LUSTUCRU "LA PREUVE PAR L'OEUF"

France, 1964. The pasta brand LUSTUCRU released an ad titled "Proof by the egg." Instead of just saying their pasta used fresh eggs, they set out to show it honestly, and with humor, through film.

The idea

The title "LA PREUVE PAR L'OEUF" means "proof by the egg," and it captures exactly the brand identity LUSTUCRU had held onto since 1911: pasta made with fresh eggs. Watching the film, you can see how the egg itself becomes the star, speaking for the quality of the product.

What happened

This ad won the Palme d'Or at the Venice Film Festival in 1964, and the following year, in 1965, it took both first and second place in the advertising film category at the Cannes Film Festival. In the history of French advertising, LUSTUCRU is remembered as a brand that greatly contributed to the development of advertising as a kind of science.

Afterthought

I couldn't find detailed background on how this campaign came together, but there's something telling about a brand in 1964 choosing to put the word "proof" right in the title. It shows real intent to be honest in advertising. An egg, some pasta, and a bit of humor, that was enough to make an ad work back then. I find myself a little envious of that era.
