The commercial that branded a logo onto a little brother's butt won Gold at Cannes / MTV "Jukka Bros"

Four brothers live deep in the woods, and the older ones show no mercy to their uncool little brother. The punishment tool is a ping pong paddle, and what gets pressed into him is the MTV logo. The punishment itself becomes the ad.

The problem

This launched in 1999 as MTV's first new campaign since 1996. It was shot at an actual cabin built in the Swedish forest.

The insight

The three older brothers watch MTV, so they know what's cool. But the youngest brother, who lives apart from them, doesn't. The clever part is turning this gap between "knowing" and "not knowing" directly into the structure of a punishment game. Whether it's the wrong shoes or an uncool dance, the reason doesn't really matter—not watching MTV is itself the crime.

The idea

Every time the youngest brother does something "uncool," his brother grabs him by the ear, drags him outside, and brands the MTV logo onto his butt with a stamp and the paddle. The setups change—Wrong Shoes, Sexy Dance, Fashion Check—but every episode ends with this same gag. The cheap sets and stiff acting actually make it feel more real, and the amateurish tone was deliberately made to be the opposite of MTV's usual polished world.

What happened

It won Gold at the 2000 Cannes Lions. The series went on to collect many more awards, including D&AD and a Clio Gold. It was made by Fallon New York, directed by Sweden's Traktor.

Afterthought

It's funny, but it also really hits its mark. Instead of describing the brand's world directly, it sneakily turns it into a device where "whoever doesn't know gets punished." By today's standards the depiction feels a bit edgy, but in 2000, MTV turned that very awkwardness into its weapon.
