THE RING | THE 4TH JUDGE | 2025
The Day AI Made a Boxer Shout "Fuck All Computers!" / THE RING "THE 4TH JUDGE"
An AI scored a boxing match, and the result was Tyson Fury cursing it out live on air. This wasn't just a tech demo — it was a challenge to a rule that had stood for 100 years: that three humans decide who wins.
The problem
For over 100 years, boxing has relied on three human judges ringside to decide the winner. But questionable decisions caused by subjectivity or missed moments have repeatedly shaken people's trust in the sport.
The insight
The starting point was the idea that a respected boxing magazine could tackle this problem in a way that governing bodies or promoters never could. For The Ring, a brand built around fairness and accuracy, bringing in an AI judge wasn't some gimmick — it was a natural next step.
The idea
The AI, called "4th Judge," uses real-time computer vision and has been trained on 103 years of fight data. It analyzes punches, movement, and the back-and-forth of each round to generate its own scorecard. The scoring was verified by the WBC and made its world debut at the Usyk vs. Fury rematch in December (month 12) 2024. Fans could even chat with the AI to hear its take on each round, adding an interactive layer.
What happened
In its debut fight, the AI's scores closely matched those of the three human judges — yet it still caused enough of a stir that Fury responded with "Fuck all computers!" Since then, it's been used in several major fights, including Beterbiev vs. Bivol, becoming a recurring part of the sport. The campaign swept up advertising awards around the world, including the Dubai Lynx Grand Prix, Eurobest, D&AD, Loeries Craft Gold, and Cannes Lions.
Afterthought
What's interesting is that this AI wasn't designed to replace humans, but to stand alongside them. It doesn't even affect the actual outcome — and yet its mere presence sparked real debate. That, I think, is the most powerful kind of spark an ad campaign can light. As for Fury's outburst, I bet the people behind this campaign were secretly thrilled.
