TINDER | SWIPE NIGHT | 2020

A Night When "Swiping" Got a Story / Tinder "Swipe Night"

Three hours left until the end of the world. Open Tinder, and a first-person end-of-days drama begins. You're forced to swipe a choice within seven seconds, and that choice changes not just the story, but who you match with.

The problem

"Swiping," the thing Tinder itself created, had become boring for Gen Z, who make up over half of its users. The challenge was to "make swiping great again." That meant changing the product itself, not just making another ad.

The insight

Gen Z is a generation that talks through content. Going back to the core of what a dating app is—connecting people with people—Tinder built a system where the results of your choices fed directly into matching. The answers you picked stayed on your profile, becoming a conversation starter.

The idea

It's a night when a meteor is closing in and the world will end in three hours. As the main character, you spend your last hours with friends. "Save the dog or save the person?"—choices you have to make within seven seconds branch the story, and those same choices decide who you get matched with. It aired only on Sundays from 18 to 24, a six-hour window each week, creating the feeling that everyone was on Tinder live at the same time.

What happened

The first broadcast drew more viewers than SNL did that same weekend, with 15 million people taking part. Matches rose 26% above normal, and messages rose 12%. In 2020 it rolled out globally, reaching a cumulative 20 million people. In 2021, it won the Grand Prix in the Entertainment category at Cannes Lions.

Afterthought

It doesn't feel like an ad at all, yet it connects right back to the core purpose of matching. Because the answers you picked stayed on your profile, apparently a vibe formed on social media of "I don't want to match with someone who made that choice." Matching people by their values—kind of scary, but clever. Who knew the simple act of swiping could hold this much story.
