Putting 'We're Broke' Right at the Center of the Idea

Six ads that turned a shortfall into the raw material itself

When budgets run short, the work is supposed to shrink along with them. That's the assumption, anyway. The six ads gathered here start from the opposite premise, treating having no money as the very material the idea is built from. A town buried under 35 billion yen of debt rebranded itself as "NO MONEY BUT LOVE" and put out a radio commercial with zero production cost, voiced over the phone by customers of its rival companies. Each ad is missing something different, and there's no real way to rank them by how deep the lack runs. So they're simply lined up in the order they appeared, from Yubari in 2009 to Cannes in 2026. The last one on the list is an ad that got covered in 118 countries without ever having footage shot specifically for it.
