Not "Delicious," Just "Convenient" / Kewpie Half "Convenient"

This is an ad for a condiment, but it never says "delicious" or "good for you." The only word it says is "convenient." Mariko Takahashi just stands there on screen, and that's it.

The insight

As the copy line "It's fine alone. It's also fine not alone." shows, the early ads for Kewpie Half dug surprisingly deep into what mayonnaise as a product actually means. Those early Kewpie Half ads were brilliant in how they portrayed women, with a distinctive world all their own, and "Convenient" is part of that same lineage. A lifestyle proposal comes first, even before the product's features.

The idea

The only thing that stays with you is the single word "convenient." It doesn't just mean handy or practical—it feels like that one word also carries a kind of affirmation of freedom, the idea that "it's fine to be alone."

Afterthought

I keep wondering: did they cast the talent first, or come up with the message first? How do they even think this way? I'd love to peek inside the Kewpie team and see what's going on in there.

In This Case, the Target Must Be the Parents / CALORIEMATE "Yume no Senaka" (The Back of Dreams)

This CALORIEMATE commercial cheering on students taking entrance exams follows a year in the life of a son grinding through a second attempt at university entrance exams, from the mother's point of view—from the day he decides to repeat the year to the day of the exam itself. Niiro Murakami, who shaved off his long hair for the role, plays the son, while Misuzu Kanno plays the mother who watches over him with quiet warmth. The soundtrack features Ryota Fujimaki's own cover of Remioromen's song "March 9th."

A year spent fighting something invisible was also a year held up by something invisible / Otsuka Pharmaceutical CALORIEMATE "Invisible Things"

2020 was a year when everyone fought an invisible virus. And CALORIEMATE still delivered its usual commercial to that year's students taking entrance exams. But things didn't go as usual. Remote classes, disinfectant, acrylic partitions, cancelled competitions. The moment Naotaro Moriyama's "Sakura" started playing, the tears wouldn't stop.
