Right Now, More Than Ever, I Wish Teachers Like This Really Existed / Fanta "Teacher" Series

These Fanta commercials aired from 2002 to 2004, featuring Dragon Sensei, DJ Sensei, Leather Jacket Sensei... A series that zeroed in hard on junior high and high schoolers—especially junior high kids—and perfected the art of being ridiculous (said as a compliment).

The insight

Each ad introduces a teacher with way too much personality, shows a bit of their class, and then cuts to the students after school—hanging out on a riverbank or somewhere similar—grumbling about their worries and cracking open a Fanta. That's the flow every time, right down to a kid tossing in a comment at the end. Keeping that same format consistent makes you look forward to what teacher shows up next. Smart move.

The idea

As a parody of the famous teacher drama 3-B's Kinpachi Sensei, a new oddball, larger-than-life teacher shows up each episode—like "Dragon Sensei," known for his signature "Acho!" battle cry, or "DJ Sensei," who teaches class riding a DJ's beat.

What happened

The series won the Gold Prize at the ACC CM Festival three years running starting in 2002, and was well received when it originally aired. In 2008, part of the series was revived as part of a campaign marking the 50th anniversary of Fanta's launch in Japan, and in 2024, a collaboration video celebrating the release of Jujutsu Kaisen volume 27 was released, drawing plenty of attention.

Afterthought

The environment around education has changed a lot since 2003, but if people are going to keep talking about "diversity," it'd actually be kind of fun if teachers like these really existed—that's about the extent of my despair over Japanese education. My personal favorite is DJ Sensei. He's just got great energy.
