GALITIA BANK | Lopetegui Deposit | 2007
Why Did He Faint? The Whole World Wanted to Know / Banco Gallego "Lopetegui Deposit"
Footage of former goalkeeper Lopetegui collapsing live on air somehow became a bank ad. And the fixed deposit product was even named the "Lopetegui Deposit." I just love this kind of thinking.
The problem
Financial advertising had run out of steam. With every bank pushing similar fixed deposit products, the question wasn't just how good the product was, but how it was presented. Banco Gallego was once a well-known regional bank in Spain, but to expand nationally it needed to refresh its brand and create buzz. In June 2006, football commentator Julen Lopetegui (a former Barcelona goalkeeper) suddenly collapsed live during a World Cup broadcast, and the footage exploded across YouTube. Everyone wondered, "Why did he faint?" but no one had an answer.
The insight
Shackleton creative Pablo Alzugaray said that a memorable real-world event can be reinterpreted for a brand, while Juan Nonzioli called unpredictable, highly relevant events—like Zidane's headbutt—a goldmine that can be put to commercial use. In other words, this was a challenge to turn coincidence and timing into the perfect campaign. The seams were blended so skillfully that right after the real footage of the collapse, a staff member appears holding a card reading "10% interest rate," melting reality and fiction together.
The idea
On October 27, 2006, a teaser ad ran first in newspapers and online. With the copy "Why did Lopetegui faint?", it directed people to a dedicated site, www.porquesedesmayolopetegui.com. The site featured a video revealing the "truth" behind the collapse: he fainted from shock after seeing a new deposit offering 10% interest. Banco Gallego offered depositors this extraordinary 10% rate and named the product itself the "Depósito Lopetegui" (Lopetegui Deposit) — the first time in Spain a football player's name had been used for a financial product. Once revealed, the campaign rolled out across press, radio, online, direct mail, events, and in-branch promotion.
What happened
The video racked up 50,000 views within days. New customer acquisition hit 132% of target, and new deposits reached 157% of target. Banco Gallego was covered on TV programs and in articles, with the economic newspaper Expansión running the headline "Banco Gallego reinvents financial advertising." The campaign won the Grand Prix in the Direct category at Cannes Lions 2007, along with two Gold Lions. It also won the Grand Prix in the Direct category at El Sol that same year, and Shackleton ranked first in the world in the Direct category and fifth overall in The Big Won Report 2007. It was also only the fourth Cannes Grand Prix in the history of Spanish advertising.
Afterthought
Honestly, there's a kind of thrill in getting swept along without quite knowing where the truth ends and the staging begins. Apparently even the judges said it was so local they struggled to fully understand it, and it took some debate before it won the Grand Prix unanimously. But I think the reason it was chosen in the end is that sheer courage to turn coincidence into inevitability. The moment where reality and fiction melt into each other—that's proof of what makes advertising truly exciting.
