One Second Is All It Takes to Win a Music Fan's Heart / BUDWEISER "ONE SECOND ADS"
The very first note is all it takes to know the song. That feeling every music fan has was turned straight into an ad. Budweiser's "ONE SECOND ADS," an ad from Brazil, won the Grand Prix in the Audio & Radio category at Cannes Lions 2025.
The problem
Budweiser had long been a sponsor on the music scene, but this time it wanted to stand next to the fans, not next to the artists. In a daily flood of endless videos and posts, a 30-second ad just gets skipped and forgotten.
The insight
A music fan can tell what song it is within one second of it starting. That's not just a sharp ear, it's a point of pride as a fan. So why not bet the whole ad on that one second?
The idea
What ran on TikTok were all one-second videos. They played just the opening of famous songs from around the world and asked, "Do you know this one?" Those who got it right received a coupon by DM. Rock fans got a second of rock, pop fans got a second of pop. The clips were so short there was no time to even skip them, but everyone wanted to check if they'd guessed right, so they played them again and again, and the comment section turned into one big music quiz.
What happened
In two weeks the campaign earned 68 million impressions, with view counts up 119% over the benchmark, and over 125,000 comments. After winning the Grand Prix, it came out that Africa Creative had written in its case study that no royalties were paid because the clips were only one second long, which sparked backlash. AB InBev apologized and retracted that statement.
Afterthought
It's not about length, it's about connection. One second wasn't just enough, it was strong precisely because it was only one second. That reversal of thinking is something to admire. But the copyright episode also left behind a homework question: where exactly is the line between cleverness and honesty?
