An 88-year-old brand says it'll give away the whole company for free / COLUMBIA SPORTSWEAR "EXPEDITION IMPOSSIBLE"

Find the edge of the earth, and the CEO will hand you the entire company. He said it straight-faced, dead serious, and even put it in a newspaper ad.

The problem

The outdoor market is a saturated category where competitors all claim the same things—"durability," "performance"—in the same words. In the middle of that, Columbia launched its biggest brand overhaul in ten years.

The insight

What Columbia zeroed in on was the flat earth community that keeps a persistent presence on YouTube, Reddit, and X. It's a fringe group, but one with a magnetic pull that always generates debate and attention. By tapping into this conversation that was already happening, they figured they could prove an abstract claim like durability in the most extreme way possible, without spending a fortune on advertising.

The idea

CEO Tim Boyle personally published an open letter in The New York Times, throwing down a challenge to flat earthers: find the edge of the earth and bring back a photo. He declared that whoever could prove it would receive the entire company—everything from the warehouses to the office equipment. In a video, Boyle himself gives a tour of headquarters while explaining just how serious this bet really is. He also waded directly into the comment sections on social media and Reddit, keeping up a back-and-forth with the community.

What happened

In the end, nobody found the edge of the earth, but the campaign reached an estimated 80 million people. At Cannes Lions 2026, it won the Grand Prix in Brand Experience & Activation, plus the festival's top honor, the Dan Wieden Titanium award, bringing its total to 10 Lions—making Columbia the most-awarded brand at the festival.

Afterthought

Being able to say "Nobody's found it yet, but if you do, wear Columbia when you go"—that's such a great tone to strike. Having the CEO himself write the letter, give the factory tour, and personally shoulder the risk. This wasn't something a marketing department dreamed up—it's something a business leader committed to with everything on the line, and that's exactly why it has so much weight behind it. Apparently letters from flat earthers are still arriving, and each one of those letters is living proof that this campaign actually worked.
