The Car That Stole a Frog's Call / HYUNDAI "COQUÍ ALARMED"

Puerto Rico's car theft alarm sound turned out to be the call of the island's beloved frog. Once people realized it had been quietly borrowed, they were not happy about it.

The problem

The coquí is a small frog found in Puerto Rico, and its call is considered part of the island's very identity. But in recent years its numbers have been declining, which meant fewer and fewer chances to actually hear that call.

The insight

Many residents had started noticing that the sound of a car theft alarm sounded a lot like a coquí's call. It turned out to be more than just similar—it was essentially the same sound, lifted almost as-is. When people realized this, they were genuinely angry: their frog's voice had been used in the background without any credit.

The idea

Instead of brushing off the backlash, Hyundai leaned straight into it. The brand spoke up for the coquí's call as a sound worth protecting, while also drawing attention to the ecosystem around it, including endangered species. The key was weaving respect for the frog and the car brand's sound back together into a single story.

What happened

This campaign won the Grand Prix in the Audio & Radio category at Cannes Lions 2026. For BBDO Puerto Rico, the agency behind it, this marked the company's first-ever Lion.

Afterthought

It's honestly kind of funny how one little frog call managed to tie together national sentiment, wildlife conservation, and a car ad all at once. Turning public anger into a story people end up loving is seriously impressive. And knowing that a coquí is probably calling out somewhere right now makes me a little happy.
