Using "Death" to Bring Users Back to Life / Duolingo "Duo's Death / Revive Duo"

On February 11, 2025, Duolingo's green owl died. X's for eyes, tongue lolling out. Normally, killing off your own mascot would be a PR disaster. But this was actually the start of a "resurrection" that racked up 1.7 billion impressions.

The problem

CEO Luis von Ahn had been pushing the team to "make it weirder," and that's how the dead Duo icon came to be. It was originally supposed to end after just three videos, but the first post got a bigger reaction than anyone expected. The team decided they had no choice but to ride the wave, and pulled the whole company into it.

The insight

Duolingo already had a character that users had essentially built on their own. When people turned the app's relentless push notifications into memes, the brand didn't push back—it leaned in all the way. This campaign was simply more of the same: the official team fully committing to playing the "unhinged owl" that users already wanted.

The idea

Duo died after being run over by a Cybertruck. To bring him back, users were given a mission: collect 50 billion XP together as a community. Meanwhile, other mascots started dying off one by one too. The long-running Dua Lipa joke finally paid off, and when she herself responded, it spread even further. Two weeks later, Duo crawled out of a coffin on a beach and admitted the whole thing had been a test.

What happened

In two weeks, the campaign generated 1.7 billion impressions. Users also hit the 50 billion XP goal, and the campaign went on to win the GRAND PRIX.

Afterthought

If this had to go through 20 rounds of approval, it would have died before it even got started. Duolingo used its in-house speed to turn the whole uproar into a company-wide campaign within three business days. Instead of a brand just pretending to act human, here was a character that actually lived, actually died, and was brought back to life by users themselves. Turns out advertising can do that too.
