WENDY’S | Keeping Fortnite Fresh | 2019

They kept smashing freezers inside a video game—until the game itself changed / Wendy's "Keeping Fortnite Fresh"

A fast food chain spent nine hours destroying freezers inside Fortnite, and the game's developer ended up removing freezers from the game entirely. This stunt beat Nike's "Dream Crazy" to win the very first Grand Prix in the Social & Influencer category at Cannes Lions.

The problem

For 10-somethings, Fortnite wasn't just a game anymore—it had become a whole culture connected through Twitch. Wendy's had been saying "fresh, never frozen" for 50 years, but the more you repeat the same line, the less anyone actually listens.

The insight

In Fortnite's new "Food Fight" mode, VMLY&R noticed that a rival burger chain was freezing its beef inside the virtual world—a setup that directly contradicted Wendy's whole philosophy. Instead of squeezing in an ad, they committed to something bigger: having Wendy's itself step into the game as a player.

The idea

They created an avatar that looked just like Wendy's, armed it up, ignored every other player, and went around smashing nothing but the freezers in the rival burger shop. They livestreamed nine hours of play on Twitch and destroyed 752 freezers. The idea came together the morning of, and it cost nothing to produce.

What happened

Social media mentions jumped 119%, the stream racked up 1.5 million minutes watched, and other players started copying the freezer-smashing themselves. The topper: the developer actually removed every freezer from the game and replaced them with new equipment. The game itself had changed.

Afterthought

Instead of showing people an ad, the brand turned itself into a player and caused chaos—and the game company was the one who gave in. You can't plan for an ending like that. And the fact that they came up with it that same morning, with zero budget, still amazes me every time I hear it.
