A tiny wooden island floating at sea moved a whole country / Grupo Estratégico PAE "MORNING AFTER ISLAND"

In Honduras, taking the morning-after pill can get you up to six years in prison. So they floated a small wooden platform beyond the border — or more precisely, out on the water, where no country's laws can reach.

The problem

In 2009, Honduras became the only country in Latin America to fully ban the emergency contraceptive pill. Since then, 330,000 minors have become mothers, and one in four women gets pregnant before turning 18. The NGO GE PAE spent over ten years protesting and lobbying, but religious leaders and the media stood in the way, and nothing changed.

The insight

If your own country won't recognize your rights, go somewhere no government holds power. GE PAE and Ogilvy Honduras landed on an idea: international waters. They consulted maritime law experts to work out a safe zone and the right timing for a voyage. Their only goal was to create an image powerful enough to move the whole world.

The idea

A wooden platform floated in international waters, called Morning After Island. Here, Honduran women could legally take the pill. They set up a sailing schedule so any woman who needed it could ride for free, filmed the trip as a short video, and shared it. At the end, just one simple line: asking people to sign a petition.

What happened

In less than a week, influencers around the world were sharing it, and CNN picked up the story. Within six months, 800,000 people had signed, media in 14 countries covered it, and the president invited GE PAE to an official meeting. In 2023, the emergency contraceptive pill was legalized. Ogilvy brought home Honduras's first eight Cannes Lions.

Afterthought

The island has since retired, its job done. But the fact remains: a single wooden plank moved a law that hadn't budged in ten years. A voice that protests and lobbying couldn't reach finally got a seat at the table — out on the open sea. Advertising can change the world.
