Nobody knew their furniture had a birthday / IKEA "HIDDEN TAGS"
IKEA furniture has a hidden tag that disappears once it's assembled. On it: the manufacturing date. From that one fact alone, IKEA pulled off a treasure hunt that got all of Portugal involved.
The problem
The misconception that "IKEA furniture doesn't last" is stubbornly common worldwide. In an Ipsos survey, 57% agreed that furniture is no longer something you keep for life — the exact opposite of the philosophy IKEA's founder stood for.
The insight
Nobody remembers how old their own furniture is. But the proof had been buried inside it the whole time. The idea was to turn something that was already there — the hidden tag — into a witness.
The idea
A campaign to find the oldest IKEA furniture in Portugal. Participants just had to photograph their tag and send it in, with a prize of 2,000 euros. IKEA promoted it everywhere from TV to outdoor ads, and asked IKEA Family members to share the stories behind their furniture too.
What happened
4,573 tags were submitted. The oldest was a wooden table made in 1969, and the average age came out to 18.5 years. Sales rose 14% year over year, and the campaign won in multiple categories at Cannes Lions.
Afterthought
Instead of saying "it lasts," they made the furniture prove it lasted. Turning the customers themselves into witnesses — that structure is just brilliant. It shows that furniture speaking for itself is more powerful than any ad claim.
