THE RITZ-CARLTON | LATE CHECKOUT: A RITZ-CARLTON STORY | 2025
How a Hotel Brand Won Cannes Gold Without an Ad Agency / THE RITZ-CARLTON "LATE CHECKOUT: A RITZ-CARLTON STORY"
A four-minute short film made without an ad agency beat out Prada and Tiffany to win Gold in the Luxury category at Cannes. The budget was under $1 million. It was made by just three parties: the hotel brand, a streetwear label, and a production company.
The problem
This was the first Gold Lion ever won by a luxury hospitality brand, chosen from among 181 entries. Ritz-Carlton was navigating a tricky balance: softening its stiffness without losing its prestige. They threw out the usual hotel-ad playbook of quick, glossy poolside shots altogether.
The insight
Their partner, Late Checkout, isn't just an apparel brand — its whole concept is built around an imaginary hotel. A relaxed stay, playful service, the romance of simply being a guest: its entire point of view was already built from hospitality. So this collaboration wasn't some random mashup. It was a natural fit from the start.
The idea
The story follows a guest who has to finish writing a novel by the next day, and the desk agent (played by Josh Hutcherson) who supports him. The agent arranges everything — the pool, the spa, even childcare — so the author can focus on his work. Set at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong and shot on 16mm, the film has been compared to the style of Wes Anderson. Alongside it, they also created a capsule collection that captured the exact same mood as the film.
What happened
The capsule collection sold out within days. After winning the Gold Lion, a Chapter II set in Nikko was also produced.
Afterthought
This isn't a story about agencies becoming unnecessary. But it does prove something: when the idea is strong enough and the execution is precise enough, it doesn't really matter who's standing in the middle. Gold at Cannes, for under $1 million. That fact alone says enough.
