MERCADO LIVRE | FIELD BARCODE | 2026

Just mowing the grass turned into the world's best outdoor ad / Mercado Livre "Field Barcode"

Just mowing a soccer field's grass became an ad. The sheer power of the idea—that you could scan it right through the TV broadcast and go shopping—is wild.

The problem

Mercado Livre is one of South America's biggest e-commerce platforms and has sponsored a lot of soccer over the years. Pitch-side ads are everywhere, but almost none of them let viewers actually do anything with them.

The idea

Using only the light-and-dark pattern created by mowing the stadium grass in different directions, they designed a barcode that becomes visible from above. Viewers could scan this barcode straight off the TV broadcast with their phone and get taken to a product page. No new equipment, no CGI—just a lawnmower made it all work.

What happened

It won the Grand Prix in the Outdoor category at Cannes Lions.

Afterthought

Turning a stadium ad you could only "look at" into one you could "buy from" is just delightful. It really reminds you that these days, it's the leap of imagination that gets rewarded, not flashiness.
