Eight fragments, each one a child's single moment / MIXI "Mitene" Omnibus Commercial

Just lining up the titles already makes you curious about what this ad could be. What on earth is the "Temple of Darkness" episode? And the "Ice Pack" episode has me curious too.

The idea

Each of the eight short films carries a title for a completely different situation. Student guidance, an ice pack, a park, a friend's older brother, waking up, a father, New Year's Eve — every one captures a very specific slice of everyday life. Rather than making one long commercial, the choice to split it into eight separate pieces is itself already a statement about the campaign's approach. The way each title alone makes you imagine what's inside is a device that hooks you before you've even watched anything.

What happened

It won the GRAND PRIX. The fact that it was jointly produced by Hakuhodo and TBWA HAKUHODO is also unusual.

Afterthought

Honestly, I couldn't track down the actual content of all eight films through searching. But the fact that just lining up the titles stirs up this much imagination already tells you how strong the idea is. I'm dying to know what the "Student Guidance" episode is about, and how the "Friend's Older Brother" episode turns out. I love projects that pull you in with nothing but titles like this. I'd really love to watch all eight together.

The Moment a Story Takes Hold, Aboard a Train / Fujifilm "ASTALIFT"

What happens when you bring a story into a cosmetics commercial? This ad feels like an experiment in just that. Aoi Miyazaki, disguised in a trench coat, sunglasses, and a blonde wig, jumps onto a train. Masaki Okada, claiming he's "come from the future," launches into an endless explanation of nanotechnology. Seiko Matsuda's "Red Sweet Pea" plays in the background, and in an atmosphere that can't quite decide if it's serious or comic, the two set off on a strange journey together.

There are a few ad series I look forward to every year, wondering "what will they do this time" — and Tokyo Gas's brand ads are one of them. Their "Family Bonds" series, running since 2008, has delivered one gut-punch after another straight to the Japanese heart, starting with the famous "Lunchbox Email" spot. I admire their work. The 2023 entry, "Mom's Fan Life," tells in 90 seconds the story of a mother who falls for a K-pop idol thirty years younger than her and watches her life open up as a result. It became a huge hit, racking up over 5 million views on Twitter within three days. This time, though, I found myself thinking "it's good, but..."

Less weirdness, more love — that's what I felt watching this commercial when it aired at the end of 2015. The Alien Jones series started out as a bit of an odd concept, but it's been quietly turning into "the way things just are," and honestly, I'm starting to think it's heading toward becoming a truly moving epic. I'm looking forward to it. Really looking forward to it.
