Turning your enemy's phone into your ally, instantly / NOKIA "MYSTERY AD"

You're sure you're using an iPhone, but suddenly the screen turns into Windows Phone. You're sure you're on Android, but somehow it's now Nokia's interface. This "impossible experience" was built as an actual mobile ad format. Winning Gold at Cannes Lions Mobile in 2012, this trick stands out both for the boldness of targeting competitors' users directly, and for the technical precision needed to pull it off.

The problem

Back in 2012, Nokia was trying to launch the Lumia 800, a Windows Phone device, into the German market. But the market was already dominated by iOS and Android, and getting anyone to pay attention to a phone running a new OS was incredibly difficult. The usual move would be to run ads talking up how great the Lumia was. Instead, YOC and Carat Düsseldorf bet on a completely different idea: turning competitors' users' own devices, just for a moment, into an experience machine.

The insight

The real strength of mobile advertising is targeting precision. You can deliver ads to iPhone users only, or Android users only, with pinpoint accuracy. This idea pushed that strength to its limit: show the ad only to users of competing operating systems, and on their very own device, simulate the experience of using a Windows Phone. It's hard to imagine a more efficient, experience-based approach. The strategy wasn't about persuading people with arguments, but pulling them in through surprise and hands-on sensation.

The idea

While someone was browsing the mobile web, a full-screen Windows Phone interface would suddenly take over the display. Whether they were on an iPhone or an Android phone, it felt like their own device had turned into a Nokia Lumia 800. Tapping the ad led to a smooth, app-like landing page where people could browse the Lumia 800's features in a slideshow, look at accessories, and watch videos. By making full use of rich media technology, the ad experience itself became a product experience.

What happened

The click-through rate reached about 30%, clearly showing it reached the intended audience. It won a Gold Lion in the Rich Media Advertising for Mobile Devices: Products category at Cannes Lions 2012, and was also a finalist for the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards. Judges praised it for its innovation and for making full use of what mobile as an advertising channel does best. Thanks to this recognition, YOC's Mystery Ad format itself became widely known.

Afterthought

I really love the idea of turning the enemy's own weapon into your ally, even if just for a moment. And what's even better is that it works not through persuasion or argument, but purely through that "wait, what is this?" sense of surprise and curiosity. This feels like a textbook-worthy piece of work, designed with a full understanding of what makes mobile advertising special: precise targeting, the expressive power of rich media, and how naturally it fits with touch interfaces. The fact that an ad from 2012 still makes you go "ah, nice" in 2026 just shows how solid the core idea really was.
