SKF | THE FAROE ISLANDS SPACE PROGRAM | 2026

A bearing company just launched a plan to colonize Mars / SKF "THE FAROE ISLANDS SPACE PROGRAM"

A bearing maker announced a plan to colonize Mars. Except the stage isn't actually Mars—it's the Faroe Islands. But the fact that they're so dead serious about it is irresistible.

The problem

SKF makes bearings for wind turbines. As a B2B company, it has low brand awareness, and had no good way to show ordinary people just how extreme the conditions are that its technology can withstand.

The insight

The Faroe Islands, battered by fierce winds and storms, are an Earthly place that feels like Mars. The joints of the wind turbines that keep turning there are, in a sense, SKF's bearing technology itself. If you treat "a harsh corner of Earth" as "an unknown planet," a story about parts that could easily be boring suddenly becomes a space exploration story.

The idea

SKF treated the Faroe Islands as a stand-in for Mars and launched a fictional space program. They produced content built around the idea of applying wind turbine bearings as joint parts for spacesuits, presenting their real technical capabilities as "durability tests for colonizing Mars."

What happened

The campaign won the Grand Prix in the Creative B2B category at Cannes Lions, drawing unusual acclaim as branded content from a B2B company.

Afterthought

Hearing "a bearing company talking about spacesuits" made me laugh at first. But behind that laugh, you can sense real confidence in their technology for eliminating friction. It's impressive how far they managed to launch a topic that could so easily have stayed boring.
