Sprite | Pragnienie nie ma szans (Strip Poker) | 2005
The Battle with Grandma / Sprite "Pragnienie nie ma szans"
Losing your clothes in a bottle cap contest? What's that all about?
The problem
The "Thirst Doesn't Stand a Chance" campaign launched in Poland in 2005, built around a simple bottle cap contest that Sprite always wins. The line "I'm Sprite, you're thirst" became a catchphrase among young people.
The insight
In Japan, Sprite is the wholesome drink you grab after club activities. But in Poland it was sold as the exact opposite: a rule-breaking, provocative drink for the night. Locking that into rebellious youth culture made it strong.
The idea
In the "Strip Poker" spot, a young man plays a bottle cap contest against his grandmother. As he loses and strips off one piece of clothing at a time, his grandmother's triumphant grin takes over the screen. This kind of absurd taboo-breaking is the signature of the series. It was made by Publicis.
What happened
The campaign ran until 2008, and the phrase became so embedded in pop culture that even politicians and journalists started using it. Fans also made plenty of parody videos.
Afterthought
It all comes down to that face. The grandmother's triumphant grin after stripping her own grandson of his clothes and his pride. No matter what country or culture you're from, you can't help but laugh.
