The Value of Photos From When It Wasn't So Easy Is Skyrocketing Right Now / Fujifilm "Photos That Carry On to Tomorrow"
Kazu, Furuta, and Tulio each look back at their past while gazing at old photos. Not every meaningful photo needs a dramatic story behind it, but a single picture that captures a true turning point in someone's life carries a weight that words just can't match.
The insight
Ever since "photo mail" first appeared, almost every person in Japan has started carrying a camera with them every single day, and both taking and looking at photos have become overwhelmingly easy. But the value of a photo that captures a once-in-a-lifetime moment from the past hasn't changed at all — if anything, the value of "photos from back when it wasn't so easy" seems to be relatively skyrocketing these days. It's a great example of how the future can reshape and redefine the past.
Afterthought
I have nothing to add about the execution itself — it's just excellent. Not everyone's life is as dramatic as Kazu's, Furuta's, or Tulio's, but every life has moments like these, and I love the idea that photography becomes the tool that shines a light on them. It does make me wonder what will happen to photography once AI gets advanced enough to generate images of "what might have been." But even so, I'll keep pressing the shutter today, believing there's a shot that only I can take, and only I can leave behind.
