What Will Uno-tan Do? / Suntory BOSS "Seven: Against the World"

This ad is from 1999. Watching it again, you can't help wondering what Uno Kanda is up to these days — but more than that, this commercial takes nitpicking to an almost legendary scale and turns it into pure entertainment.

The insight

The idea that "a bad personality, taken far enough, becomes entertainment" is a fascinating way to look at it. Maybe the real discovery here was proving that this kind of dark humor — a casual promise backfiring on such a massive scale — could actually work as a form of exaggeration.

The idea

A man (Shinchan) tells a woman, "I'm on your side, Uno-tan, even if it means standing against the whole world." And then he really does end up with the whole world against him. Criticism pours in from every direction — China, Russia, the Middle East, America, and even Japan — until finally, a pilot asks him the punchline: "So, what will you do about Uno-tan?"

Afterthought

Honestly, you kind of see it coming (laughs). I can't help wondering what Shinchan decided to do in the end. Around 1998–99, when BOSS Seven came out, the brand was shifting away from its Eisaku Yazawa series toward edgier content, and this ad probably fits right into that shift. There isn't much information out there about it, but it's the kind of commercial that, once you've seen it, you just can't forget.
