BURGER KING | WHOPPERETTES | 2006

Singing, Dancing Burgers: Pure Chaos, 2006 Style / BURGER KING "WHOPPERETTES"

At the 2006 Super Bowl, BURGER KING had dancers dressed as lettuce, tomato, pickle, patty, and flame perform a Broadway-style musical number. Set to the "Have It Your Way" jingle, it's a spot where the burger's ingredients sing and dance for real.

The problem

Ever since CP+B took over the account in 2003, BURGER KING's advertising had leaned into offbeat territory, with work like "The King" and "Subservient Chicken." Whopperettes came out of that same stretch, made for the Super Bowl.

The insight

Instead of explaining what's in a Whopper, turn the ingredients themselves into characters and put on a show. Rather than communicating the contents, they chose to make people watch and think, "what is this?"

The idea

In a lavish, Busby Berkeley-style musical number, lettuce, tomato, pickle, patty, and flame appear as personified characters. It was shot over seven days in Rio and also features Brooke Burke.

What happened

It aired during Super Bowl XL in 2006 and won a Gold award. It later led to a viral campaign featuring paparazzi-style reports that Brooke Burke and The King were dating.

Afterthought

Burger ingredients singing for real—that alone is crazy enough, and reason enough to remember it. I don't know the sales figures or view counts, but I bet anyone who's seen this footage never forgets it.
