What does a photo actually give you? / Canon "A picture of you"

In an age when a "photo" isn't really about capturing "truth" anymore, this film grew out of the question: how should Canon redefine its value?

The problem

Released simultaneously worldwide on 10/14/2016, on Canon's official YouTube channel "Canon Imaging Plaza," this 90-second short film centers on the theme of "the bonds photos create."

The insight

Now that anyone can easily snap photos on a smartphone, the moment had come to redefine the value of paying a bit more for a camera that takes beautiful pictures.

The idea

Nothing much happens at all. And yet what's shown is the passage of time, memories, and a love that overflows and can't be contained.

What happened

An elderly couple sits on a bench on a hill, eating sandwiches. When the husband points his camera at his wife, she suddenly appears as her younger self. That night, an old photo displayed in their bedroom turns out to be the very thing bringing that memory of the hill back to life.

Afterthought

It's true—when a memory is beautiful, you want to preserve it beautifully, and that makes you want a good camera. Got me, hook, line, and sinker.
