Only Real Smell Could Make a Miniature Town Feel Real / De'Longhi "Tiny Coffee Shops"
From the small coffee shops in a tiny little town, the smell of real coffee drifts out. Everything is miniature, except the scent, which is full size.
The problem
Coffee machine ads live in a tough spot, since it's hard to stand out by showing off "taste" or "extraction technology." De'Longhi chose to make its weapon scent, something that video or photos can never actually convey.
The insight
The appeal of coffee really starts with its smell, before you even get to the taste. Visual-only ads end up leaving out that most powerful part. I think that's the realization behind this idea.
The idea
Craftspeople built an incredibly detailed miniature town and coffee shop, then hid a real De'Longhi machine inside it that actually brewed coffee. People who stopped to look were startled to find a real coffee smell drifting out of the diorama in front of them.
What happened
The campaign won the Grand Prix in the Industry Craft category at Cannes Lions, recognized for the sheer precision of its craftsmanship.
Afterthought
There's real courage in putting something that video or photos can never capture right at the center of an ad. When the believability of a miniature meets a fact that never lies, like smell, it turns out to be this powerful.
