GUANGZHOU YANGAI SPECIAL CHILDREN PARENT CLUB | DESPAIR WHIRLPOOL | 2011

Being Pulled Into the Whirlpool / GUANGZHOU YANGAI SPECIAL CHILDREN PARENT CLUB "DESPAIR WHIRLPOOL"

Just the title, "Despair Whirlpool," is enough to make your chest tighten. And once you hear it's an ad from a group supporting parents of children with autism and developmental disabilities, you can probably guess what that whirlpool represents.

The problem

Guangzhou's Yang Ai Special Children Parent Club is a support group for parents raising children with developmental disabilities and autism.

What happened

The campaign made the shortlist at Cannes Lions and won a Merit award in the Public Service category at The One Show. I wasn't able to confirm the actual visual content of the piece.

Afterthought

Honestly, there isn't much information to go on here. But just from the impact of the name "Despair Whirlpool," I feel like I can faintly sense what the creators were trying to express. I'd really love to see the actual visuals someday.
