The Moment Your Voice Memo Passes 3 Minutes, It Turns Into a Beer / HEINEKEN "Could Have Been a Heineken"

The problem

Over 900 million voice messages are sent on WhatsApp every day, and they keep getting longer each year. Brazil is said to be the country that sends the most voice memos in the world, with one study finding that the average person there spends 150 hours a year sending and receiving them.

The insight

Research found that more than half of people feel voice memos are starting to replace face-to-face conversation, yet many of those same people said they felt more satisfied after talking in person. Heineken zeroed in on that gap: things have gotten more convenient, but the quality of connection has been left behind.

The idea

LePub Milan and São Paulo built a private bot on WhatsApp. Users 18 and older can forward any voice memo they receive that's longer than 3 minutes to the bot, and in return they get a message saying "Could have been a Heineken," along with a voucher for a free beer and even a recommendation for a nearby bar where they could go drink it together. It's a way of turning a long rambling voice note into an actual excuse to meet up in person.

What happened

The idea launched as a pilot in Brazil, backed up with out-of-home ads, content led by the people sending the voice memos, and social media rollout. At Cannes Lions 2026, it won the Grand Prix in Social & Creator, and Heineken was also named Creative Brand of the Year.

Afterthought

Honestly, voice memos running way too long is a tiny stress we all share worldwide. So the moment someone tells you it can be converted into a beer, you just think, yes, I want that. I love how this idea uses technology to pry you off your screen and pull you back out into the world.
