JEEP | Snow Covered | 1994

You can't see the car, but you know it's a Jeep / JEEP "Snow Covered"

It's 1994, and for 30 seconds something moves through a landscape buried in snow. The vehicle itself never once appears on screen. And yet everyone watching thought, "Ah, that's a Jeep." This is the ad that became the first car commercial ever to win the Grand Prix at Cannes, and even 30 years later, it hasn't lost an ounce of its power.

The problem

The mid-90s were a time of fierce competition in the SUV market. Every manufacturer was touting performance and trying to grab attention with flashy production. Jeep, caught up in that same race, must have been searching for a way to communicate the true essence of its brand. Getting through snow, getting through rough terrain, handling any environment — that was Jeep's DNA.

The insight

I think the question behind this ad was: "Do you actually need to show the car to talk about its performance?" If the mere tracks of something moving through a snow-covered road could prove its existence, that would be the most powerful kind of persuasion there is. Precisely because you can't see it, your imagination kicks in. It was a bet that put the brand's credibility to the test.

The idea

Something moves through a valley buried in deep snow. Snow piles up, it stops at a road sign, signals, and turns left. The vehicle is never shown, right to the end. All that appears is the line: "There's only one."

What happened

The ad won the Grand Prix at the 1995 Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival — the first time a car commercial had ever achieved this. It was chosen from among more than 4,000 entries, and it also marked the first Cannes win for a Detroit-based agency. It aired during the 1995 Super Bowl as well, becoming a major talking point.

Afterthought

The power to make people believe in something they can't see — that only works because of the history and trust a brand has built up over time. This ad is 30 years old, but watching it today still makes you go "wow." Simple, strong, and beautiful. I want to see more advertising like this.
