The Real Ronaldo and Messi Got Devoured by AI Memes / LEGO "EVERYONE WANTS A PIECE"
Ronaldo and Messi sharing the same screen is already a big deal on its own. But the real stars of this campaign weren't the players themselves — they were AI editors all over the world.
The problem
The 2026 FIFA World Cup was set to be one of the biggest tournaments ever. Into that moment stepped not a broadcaster or a sponsor, but a toy company: LEGO.
The insight
Young fans today don't just watch anymore — they cut things up, remix them, and make them their own on social media. LEGO leaned straight into that. Instead of worrying about tradition or polish, it built the whole ad around the very instinct young people have to grab raw material and mess with it.
The idea
At a round table in a dim room sit Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappé, and Vinícius Jr., each trying to be the one to place his own minifigure on top of a LEGO World Cup trophy. None of them manages to finish it — until a boy appears at the end and quietly snaps the last piece into place. LEGO then released this footage as raw material, openly letting fans alter and remix it with AI.
What happened
Made jointly by W+K Amsterdam and Our LEGO Agency (Denmark), the campaign won Gold in the Social & Creator category at Cannes Lions 2026. Fans created more than 2,000 AI-remixed videos, and reports say the views on these fan videos ended up surpassing those of the original post.
Afterthought
The nerve it takes to pour everything into a big, polished commercial — and then, the moment it's released, say "go ahead, break it however you like" — is something most brands would never dare, for fear of damaging their image. But building that very act of being "broken apart" into the plan from the start is what makes this the wildest, and the most fun, part of the whole thing.
