In 1995, some true legends of soccer history came together for this one. Bebeto, Jorge Campos, Éric Cantona, Paolo Maldini. Back when the internet wasn't nearly as developed as it is now, NIKE and Wieden+Kennedy put out this incredibly lavish film into the world.
The idea
The title is "THE WALL". A wall. Is it the wall of defenders a goalkeeper faces, or a metaphor for something the players need to overcome? Just from watching the video, you can't be completely sure, but there's no doubt it embodies the message NIKE consistently carried throughout the 90s: push past your limits.
What happened
It won the Grand Clio at the 1995 Clio Awards.
Afterthought
There isn't much information out there, but these NIKE and Wieden+Kennedy films from that era have something genuinely believable about them. It's not just about lining up star players, yet somehow just seeing those stars lined up makes your heart race. There was a strength to them that let that contradiction work. I'd love to dig into this more.
