REEBOK | Escape The Sofa | 2002
The Sofa Is Chasing You / Reebok "Escape The Sofa"
A man stands up to go exercise, and his sofa attacks him. That's the whole story — and it won gold at Cannes.
The problem
Made by Lowe London for Reebok, this spot became the face of a campaign urging people to "escape the sofa." It later grew into real events across the UK, including futsal tournaments where sofas served as the goals, and a street sports event called "Sofa Games" built around sofas.
The insight
Guilt over not exercising lands a lot better when it's turned into an enemy you can laugh at, rather than something someone lectures you about. So the team decided to turn the sofa into an actual monster and have it fight the man. They set it to tense, Jaws-style music, playing horror and comedy at the same time.
The idea
The moment the man tries to head out, the sofa goes berserk, and the two end up in a brawl that trashes the room. Just when he thinks he's gotten away, it chases him up the stairs, and finally gets stuck, wedged in a doorway. Inside the sofa were two puppeteers in blue suits, working a specially made lightweight sofa like a giant hand puppet, while the staircase scene used a different sofa rigged and moved with cables.
What happened
The ad swept up awards everywhere, winning gold at Cannes Lions along with honors from D&AD, BTAA, and CLIO. The promotion went all out too, even bringing in motorized sofas and pirate radio.
Afterthought
Turning that familiar moment — thinking "I should get moving" but staying glued to the couch — into an actual fistfight is a brilliant, almost unfair idea. And because they backed it with real special effects and editing, it still makes you laugh 20 years later. It's easy to see why the producer himself says it's his favorite piece of work.
