Could they get away with saying "everyone wanted to be an athlete"? / Yomiuri Shimbun "The Road I Never Ran"

"When we were kids, everyone wanted to be an athlete." That opening line feels like it could spark real debate. But Yomiuri Shimbun ran with it anyway. And that's exactly where the strength of this campaign lies.

The insight

Using the word "everyone" carries a certain kind of force to it. At the same time, it's also a universal feeling that many people have quietly carried somewhere in their hearts. People who can accept that are moved by it; people who can't won't make it to the end. Placing that fork in the road right at the center of the idea takes real resolve.

The idea

Using the Olympics and marathon running as the motif, the ad is told from the perspective of a "me" who never became an athlete. The title, "The Road I Never Ran," symbolizes both a dream that never came true and the life that keeps going anyway.

Afterthought

These days, voices saying "that was thoughtless" become visible online. Is that a feeling that was always there, or a new kind of reaction? I honestly don't know yet. But I do think whether an idea like this "gets through" or not reflects the mood of its time. For this ad from 2012, I think it was the former.
