The idea that got rejected ended up winning gold / BUDGET "AROMATHERAPY"
Put a candle in a rental car, and everyone inside drifts off to sleep — even the driver — while the car quietly drifts out of its lane. This "bad idea" is exactly what won Budget the Gold Lion at Cannes.
The problem
This Budget series worked by showing a wild idea that staff dream up in a meeting room as a fantasy sequence, then cutting back to a boss who shoots it down. This time, the pitch was aromatherapy candles.
The insight
What makes it funny is the twist: a suggestion meant to add comfort turns out to be dangerous in practice. It's the structure of a well-meaning idea leading to the worst possible outcome.
The idea
In the fantasy scene, a candle is lit inside a car full of businessmen in suits. Wrapped in the scent, everyone starts to doze off — including, eventually, the driver. With no one steering, the car wanders into the oncoming lane. Then it cuts back to the real meeting, where the boss casually rejects the idea, and that's the end.
What happened
The ad won Gold in the Film category at Cannes Lions 2000, and was also recognized at the ADDY Awards 2000 and the CLIO Awards 2000. There's a nice irony in that an idea turned down in the meeting ended up being chosen in the real awards race.
Afterthought
The boss in the ad rejects the idea, but the real judges picked it. That twist is basically the punchline all by itself. It's a good example of how, if you commit fully to something silly, the silliness itself can end up being what gets praised.
