CAMPARI | RED PASSION DISTRICT | 2006
The Night a Whole Neighborhood Turned Red / CAMPARI "RED PASSION DISTRICT"
In 2006, in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, an entire neighborhood turned red overnight. CAMPARI's "RED PASSION" wasn't a billboard or a poster—it wrapped around building walls, shop windows, and whole streets, pulling every passerby into the brand experience.
The problem
The mid-2000s was when experiential marketing was starting to draw attention worldwide. Buenos Aires was one of South America's centers of cocktail culture, making it the perfect stage for spreading an adult aperitivo culture like Campari's.
The idea
They named the entire area bounded by four streets in Palermo Hollywood—Armenia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Gurruchaga—the "Red Passion District," and teamed up with local shops like decor stores, clothing boutiques, restaurants, and flower shops to paint the whole block red in Campari's color. It became a layered brand experience blending art, design, and gastronomy.
What happened
The campaign won gold for Best Event in Latin America from the Spanish advertising marketing association (AEMP). In 2007, it evolved into "Red Passion City," expanding to a wider area.
Afterthought
It's a shame no video of this survives. But the boldness of the idea—turning an entire city block into the brand itself—and the execution it took to bring local shops on board was pretty incredible, even for 2006. This is a campaign that deserves a place in the history of experiential marketing.
