Give Cows Sick Leave, and Milk Gets Safer / TOO GOOD "PAID SICK LEAVE FOR COWS"
Sick leave for cows. I laughed when I first heard it. But by the time I stopped laughing, I realized this is a seriously important idea.
The problem
In Kenya, dairy farmers can't afford to stop milking a cow even when it's sick. If the milk stops, so does their income. As a result, farmers would keep milking cows right after giving them antibiotics, and milk carrying the risk of antibiotic-resistant bacteria was ending up on the market.
The insight
The problem wasn't a lack of knowledge. It was a system that didn't allow farmers to stop. Blaming farmers wasn't going to change anything. The shift in thinking was this: build a system where letting a cow rest doesn't cost the farmer anything.
The idea
TOO GOOD set up a system that pays farmers the equivalent of the milk income they lose while a sick cow isn't being milked. In other words, they designed an actual flow of money that works like paid sick leave, for cows.
What happened
This initiative won the Grand Prix in the SDGs category at Cannes Lions 2026. What was praised wasn't an awareness poster, but the fact that it solved the problem through an actual payment system.
Afterthought
There's no moving copy here, no tearjerker story. Just a quiet mechanism that changed the flow of money in one single place. But that one place happened to fit exactly into the gap between the law and reality. "Sick leave for cows" makes you chuckle at first. But by the time you're done laughing, you find yourself nodding along.
