A cow became a thousand taglines / OREO "OREO COWS"
A black-and-white photo of a cow that looks like nothing but an Oreo. A hundred years of what the brand has been saying, wrapped up in a single image.
The problem
In Mexico there's a culture called "chopeo," dunking cookies in milk. But for a long time, Oreo was the brand riding on milk's popularity, not the other way around. To keep that relationship alive on a crowded snack shelf, they needed a new spark.
The insight
For years, VML had been on the hunt for "hidden Oreos" everywhere: barcodes, referee stripes, crosswalks. Following that same thread, they came across the pattern of a cattle breed called the Belted Galloway. They didn't create it, they just found it. "That one cow is proof of a hundred years of tagline," said Manuel Bordé.
The idea
A five-minute mockumentary built around a Mexican rancher named Guadalupe Lopez and his cows. The townspeople call him "the weirdo who paints his cows." Director Agustín Carbonare leaned straight into that premise, using no VFX at all, letting the cows in front of the camera do all the work. A limited-edition milk bottle was also made.
What happened
Sales rose 12% year over year. The campaign won Gold and other prizes in the Direct category at Cannes Lions, and ultimately took home a Titanium Lion, the fourth Titanium in VML's history.
Afterthought
Sometimes discovery beats invention. That cow was just out there grazing, and ended up carrying a hundred years of a brand's story on its back. All it took was an eye sharp enough to notice, and the nerve to actually go film it once they did.
