TRA Mongkut Fertilizer | Soil Stay | 2026
A Soil Sample Becomes Your Room Rate / TRA Mongkut Fertilizer "Soil Stay"
A sample of soil, handed over as payment for a place to stay. That's the idea behind this farmstay program for farmers, created by Thai fertilizer brand TRA Mongkut and VML, which won the Grand Prix at Spikes Asia 2026.
The problem
Thailand has more than 13 million farmers, many of whom keep working with almost no time to rest or chance to build new skills. Without enough knowledge about soil, land gets overworked and harvests keep shrinking. Over more than ten years, TRA Mongkut had gathered data on more than 300 soil types from across the country and built a database along with a network of model farms.
The insight
What's impressive is that instead of keeping ten years of data locked away, they turned it into something farmers could actually learn from directly. The idea centers on soil itself, connecting worn-out land with farming methods that have already been proven to work.
The idea
Soil Stay works like a homestay program, but for farming. Instead of paying money, farmers hand over a sample of their soil. TRA Mongkut analyzes the soil type and matches them with a model farm where that same type of soil is being farmed successfully. Farmers get to rest between harvests while learning methods suited to their own land, then bring that knowledge home.
What happened
The program was introduced at Thailand Sustainability Expo 2025 and has won support from government agencies and agricultural organizations. More than 10,000 farmers have already signed up for the next phase. It also won the Grand Prix in the Creative B2B category at Spikes Asia 2026.
Afterthought
What really gets me is that this treats farmers as people who learn, not just customers. It's not just about opening up data, it's about building rest itself into the system.
